If you’re looking to get your vegan freak on and you’re already sorted for condoms, or not using them, perhaps you fancy spicing things up a bit in bedroom with some added extras.
Maybe you’re after personal lubricants, sex toys or ways to enjoy some more naughty fun with a lucky someone, (or two or three), you may now be concerned about whether kinky sex can even be vegan friendly, what with the amount of animals they use in everything these days!
I mean, are lubricants vegan?
What about harnesses, whips, typically leather restraints, edible items?
Hell, are sex toys even vegan?!
Sure, they exist! So where can you find all these delightful ‘sextras’?
Fear not, my sexy friend. The fun is only just beginning…
LUBE
Most lubes on the market don’t actually contain animal products, although there are some that do. The animal-derived ingredients in lubes tend to be beeswax or animal-derived glycerine. However, for most of the lubes widely available, their non-vegan credential is that they are tested on animals.
Another major concern regarding personal lubricants are parabens, as many varieties of lube contain them. Parabens are known hormone-disrupters, so it’s best to stick to products that don’t contain them.
If you’re looking for some ‘motion lotion’ for some good, clean, (or filthy!) fun, then discovering that lubricants can contain animal products can pose a challenge. Don’t fear, however, as there are now many vegan and eco-friendly lubes to choose from.
For example:
Vegan brand Hanx also provide lube, which can be bought from their site, from some online vegan retailers and from places like Boots in the UK, online or in store. Theirs is a water-based lube, perfectly safe to be used with Hanx condoms. What’s more, it’s completely free of parabens and it’s formulated with a pH similar to that of the vagina, to give you a pleasurable experience without problems. The Hanx brand is certified by The Vegan Society.
FDA approved Lovability condoms are pre-lubed, but if you need more, that’s not a problem, because..
Squilid lubricants are also very popular within the vegan community. This vegan brand offer a large selection of personal lubricants, designed for use with different types of condoms and for different areas of the body. From ‘Silver’ to ‘Natural H2O’ to ‘Transparent’ to ‘Stimulating O Gel’ and many more, you can easily check them out here https://sliquid.com/ and in the UK, you can easily buy them from Amazon plus many great online vegan stores.
MASSAGE OILS
Some of the most obvious, already vegan oils that you could use for massage are coconut oil, jojoba oil and almond oil. (Be careful with all massage oils though – because most of them will stain the sheets).
If you prefer something with more scent, or specific moisturizing or other properties, you may wish to buy a massage oil, even one designed for bedroom antics. There is a growing trend towards 100% plant-based oils, but do be careful when purchasing oils because they may contain animal-derived ingredients such as glycerine, honey or musk, as well as the finished product or ingredients having the possibility of being tested on animals.
‘The Vegan Friendly Soap Shop’ offer a range of soothing massage oils as well as body butters, (they are not stated as edible however, so please don’t lick or eat them, but can certainly be used to help create a sense of intimacy and connection with your lover).
They also have a range of soy wax candles. Check them out here.
BODY PAINTS / EDIBLE BODY BUTTERS
If you’re even more adventurous and want to try some edible body paints or butters, pure plant-based deliciousness that you can literally lick right off your partner, then, we have some great ideas;
UK based vegan chocolate brand Mocucu stay true to their ethics across the board, not only steering clear of dairy but also ensuring that their delightful raw cocoa offerings are sustainably sourced and fairly traded. For some intimate time with your lover, they offer edible chocolate body paints, body butters and sumptuous chocolate dips.
You could always go for whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate sauce or melted chocolate, or cheesecake, any of which you can easily buy from either online stores or these days, at least in the UK and USA, most supermarkets offer at least one vegan variety.
The other alternative is to make your own, – there are plenty of gooey, creamy, chocolately, or even fudgy recipes online, or you could whip up your own invention at home. For a sexy and unexpected treat, why not tell your partner you’re making it for dessert, but don’t tell them on how you plan for it to be eaten until you’re ready to consume it?
If you’re ready to get down to business and don’t have time for baking, there are plenty of vegan treats you that will quickly and easily melt down with a few seconds in the microwave. (Just make sure it’s not too hot before you pour it on).
EDIBLE UNDERWEAR
Nearly all edible panties and bras contain gelatine and/or other animal derivatives, meaning that these items have traditionally not been suitable for vegans.
If you want to eat the knickers off someone though, or have them eat yours, it’s possible to find a few on Etsy. We do have it on good authority however, that none of the vegan friendly edible undies that have been tried so far are any good, (mostly either taste absolutely naff, melt immediately, or are impossible to put on). We’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear of any that are worth the trouble.
WHIPS / FEATHERS / SILKS / ANIMAL TAIL BUTT PLUGS / RESTRAINTS and BDSM
No vegan wants to be paddled, whipped, tickled, tortured or restrained with leather, rabbit fur or silk. Unfortunately, these ‘products’ abound within the kink market, so it’s all too easy to purchase an item that utilises animals in this way, which certainly adds the ‘torture’ element, but not in the way you really want. Once again though, kinky vegan companies have stepped in to ensure you can enjoy yourself without inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on non-human animals.
Update: We have since learned that two dedicated companies that entirely dedicated themselves to vegan ‘sextras’, ‘Ethical Kink’ and ‘The Vegan Sex Shop’ are no longer trading, with the former stating such on their website and the URL for the Vegan Sex Shop being out of use for quite some time. We do not know why either company has ceased.
(Stay tuned though, as we’ll update you if they should ever come back and we have good news: a new vegan sex shop called ‘Vegan Toys’, based in the UK, is up and running. More on them below).
Over in Chile, – ‘Vegan Boots’ are a Santiago-based company, who are very happy to make vegan leather restraints and harnesses to order, (although they didn’t start out in the kink arena – check out their funny story here -), they’ve had many satisfied customers already!
DILDOS and OTHER TOYS
A lot of sex toys contain phthalates, which are chemicals added to plastics to make them softer. However, like parabens, they are notorious for easily leaching into the skin or body tissues, and this can in turn disrupt your hormones- so, overall, they’re probably not the best idea.
This British start-up is all about sex positivity and quite a bit more, with a strong ethos in sustainability and responsible and fairly-traded sourcing and manufacturing.
We just love their simple, fun logo, which says it all, and the fun, fruity toys they have to offer!
Ever wished you could take the now famous eggplant emoji and put it somewhere the sun doesn’t shine? Well now you can!
Or, why not spare that poor corn on the cob or the carrot in the fridge, and have fun with these instead?
They are certainly… vibrant! And their cherry Kegel balls are the cutest!
Whilst we don’t recommend hiding these in your fruit bowl, (because… Ew!), you have to admit that with these colourful delights, the fruit bowl is probably a damn good hiding place for one if you’re in a pinch. Just don’t forget to recover it as soon as!
As of yet Vegan Toys only offer dildos, vibrators and bullet vibrators, but we are hopeful that they will soon add to their collection and offer other types of toys. Watch this space.
