So, it’s the 3rd of March already! Another year flying by. And as Mothering Sunday in the UK falls on the 10th March this year, that means it’s only a week away! If you’re lucky enough to still have your mum in your life, or whether for you that figure is your grandma, or an aunt, or another special person, Mothers’ Day is a special occasion to shower them with affection and let them know how much they, and their love and guidance, means to you. But sometimes finding that perfect gift, the ideal way to show how much you appreciate them, can be a bit of a headache, and you already know you don’t want to get yet another cute teddy! But fear not! I’ve got you 24 special gift ideas for Mothers’ Day 2024.
Did you know that Mothers’ Day has different dates around the world? For example in the USA , mothers are honoured in May, not March. And this year, 2024, that day will be Sunday 12th May. In Mexico, Guatemala and other Latin American countries, the date is always the 10th May, regardless of what day of the week it falls on, although it’s still often celebrated on the following Sunday. But if you’re in a different country, this post is still for you. You’ll just have way more time to prepare that something special!
Mothering Sunday is also a good date to remind others that in the animal agriculture industry, mothers suffer enormously. Their whole experience of motherhood is reduced to and determined by its utility and profit for humans. We all know how cows cry when their babies are taken from them. And as we also know, it’s as easy as pie to find compassionate, ethical gifts for the mother in your life, without harming other mothers.
Okay, so there are more than 24 Mother’s Day gift ideas here, hehe. I couldn’t resist. There are ideas for different budgets and how much time you’ve left yourself have to organise them. Read on to find something special that the mother figure in your life is guaranteed to love!
Plant-based Brunch or Afternoon Tea Treat
Treat your mom to a delicious vegan brunch or dinner at a sumptuous restaurant, or cute café, or prepare a homemade feast yourself. Bath Bombs & Bubbles and Other Lovelies
My own mom loves a good ol’ soak in the tub!
We are both major fans of Lush, and they do some amazing Mothers’ Day gift packs every year, and what’s more, they come in sustainable, reusable packaging! Those wrapping scarves have been popular for years and they are always an excellent and well-received gift, hell, they have so many uses! Or you can have fun choosing specific items yourself for your special mother figure.
Of course, Lush are not the only ones offering amazing, tempting-to-eat, natural skincare and bath products. You could also check out The Vegan Friendly Soap Shop and the Bramblewood Soap Co.
Plan a Picnic in Nature
In the UK at least, the weather might be starting to turn now and Spring is arriving. If the day is nice enough, a lovely homemade picnic, perhaps paired with a little hike or walk through some of the many areas of green and pleasant countryside our country has to offer, might just be the perfect day for the two of you.
If it is still too cold, or it’s her kind of thing, you can also do this lovely idea at home for an unusual and unforgettable twist.
Take a Day Trip
Is there somewhere your mom or grandma, or aunt, or whoever it is for you, has always wanted to go and never been? Or somewhere they absolutely love visiting? Then taking them there can make the perfect Mothers’ Day gift!
For my own mum, one year I bought her tickets for the Wentworth house tour, as she loves historic buildings and had expressed that she would love to do the tour. It made the perfect surprise gift.
Another year, I took her to see The Four Tops and The Temptations, because this was music from her era and she loved it! And I admit, despite being 30 years younger than her, and much to my own surprise, I had a damn good time too!
Spa Day
Another great gift I’ve given my mom was buying her a spa massage. Spending some alone time with your mom, (or even with your siblings too if you can’t get her all to yourself,) is an excellent way to show how much you care. After all, moms sacrifice so much for us, and they take so many stresses and strains. And as every mother will testify, it doesn’t stop when we reach adulthood either! They continue to worry about us, support us, and be there for us, absorbing tension and experiencing muscle soreness. Help her let it all out with a treat to a spa.
Gift a Cooking Class
Your mother or mother figure may already be the best cook ever, but a cooking class is a great way to learn some new recipes and spend time together. There are many types on offer, where you can learn to make healthy (or unhealthy, – mac n’ cheese), hearty and delicious meals, or sweet treats. To find cooking classes near you, you can check our listings here.
Create a Personalised Recipe Book, or Gift a Trusty Recipe Book
For another take on all things ‘food’, you could create a personalised recipe book. This is very easy to do at sites such as Heritage Cookbook and Create My Cookbook, where you can add recipes you know will be appealing, throw in some of her own, or make one entirely of her own recipes. Either way, it’s a beautiful and thoughtful gift for a foodie on Mothers’ Day.
These are just two examples. A quick online search will bring up many more such companies to turn that dream cookbook into a reality.
Ethical Jewellery
My own mom’s jewellery collection of earrings gifted just for Mothers’ Day is as large as the teddy bear collection! I think she must have at least one pair of earring and one cute teddy for almost every year of my life! So a few years ago I decided to branch out and gift items that are much less expected. I’ve also bought her bracelets and birthstone necklaces. Jewellery does remain a classic and timeless gift, and personalised is often even better. Check our listings for special pieces for your special mom and grandma.
Book her some ‘me-time’ with a good book
If your mum is an avid reader like mine, a book she has been wanting or one you know will be right up her street could be the way to go.
Of course it’s not difficult to find a book when you can either shop online or in any bookstore, (thank goodness they still exist). However, if there’s a tome in particular that is more difficult to find, BetterWorldBooks might just have it. They sell both new and used books in great condition, and you have the added bonus of knowing that you fund reading reading projects for children in under-developed areas around the word when you buy through them.
Write a little book about her!
Don’t panic. This is not as complicated or difficult as it may seem. It’s a case of gathering together some nice memories of things you’ve done together or times she’s really been there for you, some nice photographs if you want and some lovely quotes, (you can find any beautiful quotes on the internet), and….. voilà!
‘I Wrote a Book about You’ offer this service and the end result is a truly heart-warming, personalised masterpiece that will ooze love and appreciation every time she picks it up. (You can also steal this idea for any other special person or occasion too).
A Memory Scrapbook
For an even more personalised take on the idea above, you could create this yourself. Supplies are easy enough to come by and it only needs to take a few hours work to complete. This is another idea I did for my mom, with photos of me and my siblings as children and photos as adults. She loved it.
Subscription Box
If you have a little more to spend and want to ensure that your mother figure feels the love every month, then a subscription box is the ideal answer. You can get vegan subscription boxes of sweet treats, healthy vegetables or even bath and beauty products.
Have a look at the great gifts subscriptions from vegan subscription companies such as
Vegan Town Surprise Hamper
The Vegan Bakes monthly sweet treats
Grubby (vegan meal kit subscription)
Happily Ever After (book and pamper kit)
The Natural Beauty Box
and so many more!
Wind down with wine or a bottle of bubbly
If she is a wine or champagne drinker, get her a special bottle to give her an evening or two of relaxation. You can pair it with candles, chocolates or bath bombs to truly give her a calm and carefree evening or two. (All the while making sure you take care of the household chores and anything else she might be responsible for, so she can really have the day off).
If you’re unsure about which wines may be suitable, check out this post for peace of mind.
Frame a special photo
This is a lovely idea whether you do it with a recently taken pic, and with any subject, (you, them, you & siblings, you two together, a family pet, a lovely view etc) or you do it with an old favourite that they never got framed themselves. It always makes for a delightful present that shows you care.
Portrait
Taking the previous idea a little further, for an even more thoughtful touch, why not have their portrait painted? Or that of a beloved pet? This can be done from just a photo, and there are many places online that will do this in varying ways, from a digital drawing to hand drawn, from painted to digitalised to look like a painted portrait.
A beautiful handbag
Another idea that is usually a winner is a beautiful and elegant handbag.
There are so many gorgeous vegan handbags to choose from, I think you’ll be literally spoilt for choice! But I can’t help you with that one. You know her best.
Old favourites Matt & Nat have a great selection, including bags made from new Cactus leather.
Immaculate Vegan also stock some chic designs, and Labante have a range that covers every type of bag possible!
Flowers – but not the ones you’re thinking of
Of course, flowers are such a staple Mothers’ Day gift and unless she’s allergic, there are not many who won’t appreciate a lovely bouquet this Mothering Sunday. Unfortunately, they don’t last forever. But here’s a version that pretty much does…. !
Especially ideal for the keen gardener, the aptly named Kabloom Seed Bombs are literally, the bomb! They’re cute, well-designed and a pure delight! You can both have fun throwing, (planting) them, and they’ll continue to bring delight every year as the flowers re-appear time and time again.
Find them here https://kabloom.co.uk/seedboms/ or at Amazon.com .
Scent-sational Perfumes
Avoiding animal products, products tested on animals and the associated harm does not mean going without.
Vegan-friendly or animal-free perfumes are everywhere. So if you want to treat your mother or grandma to a special scent, have a look at what these lovely companies have to offer.
Make-up or a Makeover
Without giving the recipient the idea that you think they need sprucing up, – if your special person already uses make-up or has expressed that they would like a new look, then getting them an animal-friendly makeover could be the perfect present.
Take a look at entirely vegan make-up brands here, and for the whole caboodle, you’ll find vegan salons in our listings here.
Flame-tastic Fragrant Paradise
A few scented candles are often a nice touch. You can add them to gift baskets or get big Yankee-candle style ones to help create that desired sense of peace and tranquillity.
And with all the variations available, it’s easy to stay away from animal fats, waxes, stearates and fragrances tested on animals.
Vegan scented candles are made from ingredients such as soy, coconut, rapeseed and paraffin wax, and you guessed it, – you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Light up her heart with a Mothers’ Day Lamp
For a complete twist on the idea of candles for a calming environment and trinkets and plaques or personalised cushions, a lamp with a lovely Mothers’ Day quote is a real winner. Looking pretty during both day and night, every time she switches it on she’ll be flooded with warm memories of you and how much you love and appreciate her. Check out what I mean here.
Paint a Picture
Back to the world of wall art and pictures again, but this is a guaranteed winner because a painting done by your very own hand is truly unique.
Even if you’re no artist, have no fear. Neither do you need to spend hours watching tutorials and practicing. It’s so easy to paint a scene in the style of Bob Ross that millions of people have done it, even painting scenes over entire walls in their house!
Of course, you’ll want to stay away from certain paints and ingredients, and you can do that by checking out vegan art supplies here.
Film-tastic Movie Night
Either settle down with her to watch a great film or two in the comfort of home, or take her to the movies!
Pick up some vegan popcorn or make your own, or for less healthy treats, – how about some chocolate truffles to scoff while you watch?
If you want to stay on the healthy side, a great alternative I’ve found that pairs extremely well with films and the telly, is a great big bowl of blueberries. Might as well get those anti-oxidants in.
Gift Basket
With the incessant array of vegan products available today, it’s almost too easy to design and create your own gift basket. (This is a gift I’ve received several times from family, albeit for Christmas, and it never fails to delight! It also never lasts long… but I think that’s just me). You can add delicious sweet treats of all kinds, soaps and bath and skincare products, make-up, vouchers, scented candles, pampering sets etc. The only limit is your imagination, (and maybe the size of the basket!).
If you are short on time, funds or imagination, The Goodness Project offer ready-made gift baskets of all kinds. Rather like the subscriptions, here you kind ready-made gift baskets of healthy and .. less healthy (but oh-so-worth-it!) vegan treats, pamper kits and books. What’s more, you get to try a whole new range of vegan brands that I’ll bet you weren’t even aware of!
Conclusion
Well, there we are. A by no mean exhaustive list of (at least) 24 compassionate and special Mothers’ Day gift ideas for 2024. I know there are more than 24 there, – I felt inspired. You’re certainly not limited! And there are even ideas hidden within ideas here if you look closely. I do hope that whatever you choose and whoever you choose it for, that this list has left you feeling inspired and knowing just what that perfect token of appreciation is going to be.
